What is the Community Council, How it works & the remit of the council.

What is a Community Council?

A voluntary organisation set up by statute by the Comhairle.
Is run by local residents on behalf of the community.
Local elected members attend meetings.
They play an important role in local democracy.
People who care about their community.
Independent from the Comhairle.

What does a Community Council do?

Acts as a voice for their local area.
Co-ordinates and expresses the views of the community on a wide range of issues.
Takes action in the interests of that community.
They are independent from the Comhairle but can complement the role of the Comhairle.
They bring local people together to help make things happen.
Facilitates a wide range of activities.
They advise, petition, influence and advocate on behalf of local communities.
Raise funds for local projects and events.
Promote the wellbeing of their community.
A means of becoming involved with the local community they represent.
Engage and consult with the local community they represent.
Put forward their views on local planning applications and licensing.
Represent all people in the area without prejudice.
Be non-party political and non-sectarian.
Represent a full cross-section of the community.
