BERNERA COMMUNITY CENTRE

JOIN IN, MEET NEW PEOPLE, HAVE FUN OR LEARN A NEW SKILL.

The Community Centre in Breaclete is the island gathering place for clubs, sporting activities and events. The Community café, garden and Bernera Museum are also housed at the centre. The Hall is open all year (with limited opening hours during the winter months) and provides free parking, toilets (with disabled access, and the use of shower facilities for a nominal fee).

The Community Cafe

The Bernera Café is a spacious cafe with a relaxed atmosphere. It serves home-made soup, light lunches, home baking and a selection of hot and cold drink for eat-in or takeaway. Wi-Fi is available and a small selection of local crafts is for sale within the café area.

Opening hours: Tues and Weds, 12pm-3pm

The Community Hall

The Centre hosts a variety of seasonal events, craft shows and fund-raising events throughout the year. Notices of these are posted in advance on the community notice boards, in the local newsletter, the Bernera News and by word of mouth. The hall and meeting rooms are also available for rent, per day or per hour, ideal if you want to start up a club or host a party. For BCA Members, there is a reduced rate. For more information contact the BCA

Book & Video Library

In the foyer area between the museum and café is a seating area for reading, resting, information leaflets, and a power point for charging phones (please leave a small donation for this in the café donation box). There are also books shelves with a library of books and videos which can be borrowed free of charge. The system works by donation, so if you want to keep a book, and you have another book or video that you’ve finished with then you can donate it for another person to borrow.

The Community Garden

Calum Murdo’s Community Garden sits behind the community centre.  It’s a lovely green space to be enjoyed by the whole community and contains a garden, raised beds, gazebo and benches, a seating area and wheelchair friendly tables. The garden and barbecue area can be booked for social events. There are also two picnic tables located outside the Community Centre for public use. A stone wall surrounding them provides some shelter from the wind. Please take any waste from picnics away with you.

The Gym

The community gym is a valuable resource for us all. With low cost membership options to suit and a wide range of equipment. Get in touch with the BCA administrator, Careen Maclennan to chat about joining and using the gym.

Bernera Fire Station

The Bernera Community has its own fire station, fire engine and team of trained and Retained Firefighters. The team are often on the lookout for new members so if this is something that interests you, look out for their next recruitment day, or chat to one of the Bernera team for more information or to register your interest. A Retained Firefighter receives training, an annual retainer fee, plus an additional fee for every call out attended.
